"Fermi Edge Polaritons Formed by Electron-Hole Pairs Interacting with Cavity-Confined Photons."

Abstract:We present a theoretical framework for modeling the optical spectra of microcavities (MC) with embedded modulation-doped quantum wells (MDQW). We show that the strong interaction of the cavity-confined photon with the interband excitations of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) leads to the formation of cavity polaritons. The model calculations are performed for various 2DEG densities, yielding the complex susceptibility, absorption and spontaneous emission spectra of the MDQW. The most significant result is the demonstration that cavity polaritons are formed for high 2DEG densities. In comparison, our model calculations show that excitons are not formed in bare QW's having a 2DEG with such densities.
