Abstract:

I will present the scatter in the correlation between the super massive black hole (SMBH) mass and its host galaxy mass.

The correlation itself was suggested to arise either from mergers of small galaxies or from a feedback mechanism between the accreting SMBH and the star formation process in the galaxy.

Using a sample of 87 galaxies compiled from the literature, I will show that the scatter in the correlation increases with mass in a way that preclude merger models.
