Abstract:

The picture of the geometry of black hole interiors, as it emerges within the framework of the classical theory of general relativity, is suggested to significantly change by quantum-field effects in the semiclassical framework. We consider a minimally-coupled, massless scalar field propagating on the background of Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström black holes. Using a recently developed mode-sum renormalization method, we numerically compute the renormalized   throughout the region interior to the event horizon, in both Hartle-Hawking and Unruh states. This serves us as a preparation before the numerical computation of the semiclassical stress-energy tensor throughout the interior region of a Reissner-Nordström black hole, which will provide insights regarding the nature of the singularity along the Cauchy horizon in the semiclassical framework.
