Congratulations to our alumna Dr. Hila Glanz, who conducted her Ph.D. under the supervision of Prof. Hagai Perets, for winning the International Astronomical Union (IAU) PhD Prize 2025 for her research on “Stellar Interactions: Accretion, Migration and Explosions”. The IAU PhD Prize aims to Recognize Excellence in Astrophysics and outstanding scientific achievement of PhD students around the world.
The IAU Committee found Hila’s thesis “highly original, (it) includes several first-of-their-kind contributions, and has already had outstanding scientific visibility and impact. It presents an exceptionally ambitious and mature body of work in stellar astrophysics, combining high-resolution 3D hydrodynamical simulations with new analytical modelling across a broad range of stellar interaction problems, including common-envelope evolution, collisions, triple-star dynamics, and white-dwarf mergers. “
Hila is currently a Sherman Fairchild Postdoctoral Scholar Research Associate in Theoretical Astrophysics at Caltech. She is interested in a broad range of astrophysical topics, from stellar evolution and supernovae to galaxy formation, and studies many aspects of the common envelope evolution of binary and triple systems.
