Why are coronal mass ejections so rarely observed beyond our Sun?

27 August 2026

For the first time, an international team of researchers has provided experimental evidence that the powerful magnetic fields surrounding active stars can completely suppress these massive eruptions of plasma.

The current study was recently published in the scientific journal Physical Review Letters. Combining laboratory experiments, astrophysical simulations, and advanced modeling, the researchers showed that sufficiently strong stellar magnetic fields can disrupt and confine CME-like eruptions, preventing them from escaping into space.

The international collaboration included Prof. Julien Fuchs of École Polytechnique and the Technion's Physics Department.

The research was supported by the European Research Council (ERC) Project GENESIS, ELI-NP, the Romanian Ministry of Research and Innovation, the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), and major French and European high-performance computing infrastructures.
