Abstract:

The advent of high-Q optical microcavity systems is giving birth to new technologies and
phenomena derived from the control of Brillouin scattering. After a brief overview, the
generation of highly coherent light in Brillouin microlaser systems will be examined.
Beginning with fundamental limits to laser coherence caused by microwave-rate thermomechanical quanta, the demonstration of sub-Hertz Schawlow-Townes linewidths in chipbased Brillouin lasers is discussed. Application of these systems for highly stable
microwave generation and rotation sensing is then described
