Abstract:

Ever since the emergence of quantum emitters in diamond as single-photon sources, potential qubit resources and as tools for nanoscale sensing, there has been an astounding, almost fervent effort in searching for other candidates, which might prove to be even better. In this talk, I will first give a short introduction to solid state quantum emitters and how in principle one searches for such ideal systems. I will then focus on a promising and sometimes overlooked material: Boron-nitride in its different allotropes (hexagonal lattice monolayer, nanotube, spheres/balls), presenting our motivation for looking at it, strategy, somewhat surprising findings and a detailed characterization overview. Finally, I hope to allude to the role of structure on the formation and spectroscopic features of those emitters.
