Abstract:

I will describe our discovery of spatio-temporal optical vortices (STOVs), a new type of orbital angular momentum structure that appears spontaneously in the arrested catastrophic collapse of a self-focusing pulse. Although previously unanticipated, STOVs appear to be a common and universal, providing a unifying picture of nonlinear self-guided propagation and its robustness. I will also present recent single shot measurements catching an ultrashort STOV-carrying pulse in mid-flight.
