Energizing Supernovae by a Central Engine

Abstract:

Two mechanisms to utilize the gravitational energy that the collapsing core releases in core-collapse supernovae. These are the delayed neutrino mechanism and the jittering jets mechanism.  There are several cases where these mechanisms predict different outcomes. In this talk, I will present 3 of these cases.

(1) I will discuss supernova iPTF14hls that is too energetic for the delayed neutrino mechanism, and where strong binary interaction plays an essential role in this SN explosion.

(2) I will try to account for the observations that suggest what seems to be missing exploding stars with masses of 18-25 solar masses. I will present results of numerical simulations where we increased mass-loss via wind for stars inside the instability strip. I will argue that most of these stars end as type Ibc supernovae or dust-obscured supernovae type II.

(3) I will review some properties of low-energy core-collapse supernovae and compare with my numerical simulations of stellar evolution.  I show that such stars have low binding energy and large convection regions, ingredients that help the jittering jets explosion mechanism.
