Revisiting the Quantum Hall Effect

On March 11th, 1999, Yosi Avron and Ruedi Seiler submitted the question of the “quantization of the Hall conductance” on Michael Aizenman’s list of important open problems in mathematical physics. I will discuss the problem and its solution, focusing on new tools and ideas that were developed in the process.
