Dark Matter Halos and z~2 Galaxies: Mergers, Smooth Accretion, and Feedback

I will describe the different growth modes of dark matter halos in the LCDM cosmological model as inferred from large cosmological N-body simulations. That growth is characterized by both mergers and accretion of "smooth" material. I will also present observations of rapidly star-forming and turbulent galaxy disks at z~2, and discuss attempts to model such galaxies using high-resolution, "zoom-in", cosmological hydrodynamical simulations.
