Abstract:

The underwater electrical explosion of a single wire/wire array is widely accepted as a testbed for the study of High Energy Density Physics (HEDP). This field has many applications for astrophysics, equations of state, material conductivity studies at extreme conditions, and inertial confinement fusion. In this seminar, the explosion parameters which maximize energy density deposition into exploding wires, efficient generation of a strong shock wave in water, and enhancement of its’ velocity will be discussed. Additionally, we will consider phase transitions experienced by the exploding wire and their evolution and, finally, an imploding strong shock wave in water will be presented as a promising method of generating HEDP conditions.
