Abstract:

Riemann surfaces are two-dimensional surfaces equipped with complex coordinates.  Two Riemann surfaces are the same when there is an analytic map between the two, but this is not easy to implement in practice. To tell Riemann surfaces apart, we put metrics on them.  I will explain how  metrics of least area allow us to build explicitly all the surfaces needed to describe the interactions of strings.
