Scholarships

Introduction:

The Faculty of Physics grants scholarships to graduate students engaged in research at the Technion who comply with academic faculty criteria.

A scholarship is calculated according to a basic portion, the value of which is determined according to the degree and the student's research stage. A student can receive the scholarship in 1-6 monthly portions. The value of the portion is updated from time to time.

General:

The faculty of Physics tries to allocate scholarships in the best way, so that funding for the student's first year comes from the faculty budget, while after the first year the scholarships are funded jointly by the Faculty and the the supervisor.

Please note: The proportion financed by the supervisor depends upon his or her ability to meet financing requirements, depending on his or her research grants.

Here is the scholarship assignment method that was implemented in October 2013

Doctoral degrees

A PhD student will receive six portions for 42 months, of which two portions are at the expense of the supervisor. Starting from October, in addition to this the supervisor can add more than 6 scholarship portions.

Beyond the 42 months and up to 48 months, the scholarship is funded only by the supervisor.

Beyond 48 months, the student can submit a request for an extension of 3 months, which would be at the expense of the supervisor. (This procedure applies to students who began their degree studies after 1.3.2008.)

Direct route:

A student choosing the direct route will receive a PhD scholarship.

After passing the examination, the student will receive a scholarship for 60 months.

Beyond 60 months and up to 66 months, the scholarship is funded only by the supervisor. After 60 months, the student can request an extension of 3 more months, at the expense of the supervisor.

If a PhD student wishes to receive fewer than 6 portions, his supervisor will be debited proportionately.

M.SC. students

A graduate student is accepted on the decision of the Admissions Committee, which comprises three faculty members. The Admissions Committee determines how many scholarship portions the student will receive. There are three levels of rating for scholarships.

For the coming year, the portion allocations for the three levels are determined as follows:

  • Level a - 6 portions
  • Level b - 5 portions
  • Level c - 4 portions

These allocations depend on the financing options of the faculty and may vary between years.

During the first year of study, all scholarships are funded by the faculty. During this period the student devotes most of his energy to learning (without research) but at the same time will find a supervisor. After 12 months of the scholarship, the faculty and the supervisor will jointly finance the scholarship, contributing 50% each (the ranking level of the student will not decline). After 12 months, a student without a supervisor will not receive a scholarship.

  • The Department supports a scholarship for up to 24 months. A student requesting a scholarship after completing 10 months of study, is eligible for up to 14 months of scholarship. An extension is possible only with the supervisor's funding.
  • The maximum length of an extension is only three months for students who began their studies in the winter semester, 2011.
  • The supervisor can add scholarship portions beyond the mentioned above, at his or her own expense, but within the limits of the number of months of the grant.
  • The scholarship months are counted from the beginning of thestudy period, except for a student who served in the IDF while studying. During the period of service, he will receive a scholarship for half the number of months served. (For example if a student serve 24 months during his studies he is still entitled to a grant of up to 12 months' funding by the Faculty).
  • A student who chooses to go to the direct track after an extended period of time and was not previously entitled to a grant funded by the Faculty will receives 42 months of scholarship from the Faculty when the transition take place (extensions are funded by the supervisor).
  • If a student has a supervisor with a secondary appointment in the physics faculty, the faculty will fund at least one portion.
