Abstract:Type Ia Supernovae are used to measure the expansion of the Universe, but we
know less than we would like to about their nature.
Both the nature of the progenitor and the physics of the explosion are subjects
of debate.
This talk will present a spectroscopist's angle on the inferences that can be
drawn from the available data, and how we can use modelling to understand
details of single SNe and attempt to generalise our results into a unified
framework.
