Controlling the Motion of Matter with Light

TYPEDistinguished Lecture Series
Speaker:Mark Raizen
Affiliation:University of Texas at Austin
Organizer:Professor Moti Segev
Dates:26.11 - 29.11.2009
Time:All Day
Location:
Abstract:The mechanical effects of light on matter span all scales, from the microscopic to the macroscopic, and serve as a universal theme for multidisciplinary science. In this lecture series, Professor Raizen will describe his work on the control and study of matter with light. The topics range from general methods for trapping and cooling of atoms and molecules, many-body control of degenerate quantum gases, and controlling macroscopic particles with optical tweezers. Professor Raizen will discuss emerging directions that are enabled by this new paradigm and looks towards the future of matter-light interactions. For his work Professor Raizen was awarded several prizes, including the Rabi Prize of the APS.
