Abstract: | Charles Bennett has shown that general-purpose computation can be performed by a logically and thermodynamically reversible apparatus. Together with Brassard, he developed a practical system of quantum cryptography (known as BB84). He also developed many concepts of information and randomness, including several techniques for faithful transmission of classical and quantum information through noisy channels. In 1993 Quantum Teleportation was discovered and published in the seminal paper by Bennett, Brassard, Crepeau, Jozsa, Peres, and Wootters, "Teleporting an Unknown Quantum State via Dual Classical and Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen Channels". It is an effect in which the complete information in an unknown quantum state is decomposed into purely classical information and purely non-classical Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) correlations, sent through two separate channels, and later reassembled in a new location to produce an exact replica of the original quantum state that was destroyed in the sending process. In addition to the Harvey Prize Charles Bennett was awarded several prizes including the 2006 Rank Prize in opto-electronics (United Kingdom). He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, a member of the National Academy of Sciences and an IBM Fellow. |
