Abstract: | A usual practice in theoretical physics is to pick a model believed to describe certain phenomena and study in detail all of its implications. Recently a quite different approach has been found to be very effective in computing partition functions for a class of conformal quantum field theories (CFTs) in four dimensions. One picks a single quantity, a partition function of a CFT, and tries to evaluate it for a large set of theories. Although, for a generic theory of this set it is practically impossible to perform the computation directly, exploiting different relations and symmetries interconnecting these theories completely fixes the result. In this talk we will discuss an example of such a computation and will find an intimate relation between certain partition functions of 4d theories to quantum mechanical integrable models of Calogero-Moser type. |
