Abstract: | Sonoluminescence is an extraordinary nonlinear oscillation in which a bubble concentrates acoustic energy density by 12 orders of magnitude to make a flash of ultraviolet light which can be as short as 35.picoseconds. Time resolved spectra reveal the formation of a Planck blackbody spectrum even when the photon- electron mean free path is much bigger than the micron plasma which forms inside the imploded bubble. These measurements will be explained in terms of a phase transition driven by Debye screening. While sonoluminescence has not yet created conditions for nuclear fusion, triboluminescence the mother of sonoluminescence- is a source of nanosecond xray pulses, and the phonon spectra of ferroelectrics provide a route to a palm sized neutron source. Dear All, I highly recommend you come to the Solid State seminar today, by Prof. Seth Putterman of UCLA. Seth is a world expert on sono-luminescence: emission of light, driven by sound waves. see details below. Refreshments will be served 15 minutes before the seminar. Moti Segev |
