Abstract:

High Power Microwaves (HPM) is a domain of electromagnetic radiation covering the centimeter- and millimeter-wave range of frequencies at a peak power exceeding 100 MW and reaching 10 GW. Actually, HPM is the confluence of such fields as plasma physics, electrodynamics, pulsed power, and conventional microwaves. In the talk, I will describe the variety of physical mechanisms behind HPM generation as well as existing and possible applications of HPM. The essential issue of controllability will be addressed with regard to HPM oscillators, amplifiers and pulse compressors and particular examples of problems will be given. Also, the researches in the field of HPM currently being done in the Physics Department, Technion will be presented.
