Abstract:Using concepts from quantum field theory, in
particular local gauge invariance, effective
actions, power counting and scaling limits, etc.
I describe an approach towards classifying states
of matter, in particular (ordinary and topological)
insulators. Transport equations are derived.
Applications to the quantum Hall effect, the spin
Hall effect, 3D topological insulators and to the
problem of the origin of cosmic magnetic fields are
sketched.
