X-Ray Absorption: Where What We Don't See Matters

TYPEColloquium
Speaker:Professor Ehud Behar
Affiliation:Physics-Technion
Date:16.12.2010

Location:Lidow Rosen Auditorium (323)
Abstract:The talk will explain measurements of X-ray absorption of astrophysical sources and the immense difficulties to characterize the intervening matter.
Two examples will be discussed in detail:
1. An attempt to find the missing baryons of the Universe by measuring photo-electric absorption of the farthest known point sources.
2. The utilization of atomic spectroscopy to estimate the mass flow in galactic winds emanating from around super massive black holes and their role in cosmological feedback.
