My group is focused on understanding far from equilibrium systems. These often display unusual dynamical and collective behaviors which can not be seen in equilibrium. In particular, we are currently interested in evaluating forces exerted by a class of nonequilibrium systems called active systems (these include, for example, driven colloids, `gases' of bacteria and biological gels). The forces they exert defy much of our equilibrium intuition, in particular since they lack an equation of state. We are also interested in evaluating analogues of free energies in interacting diffusive particles systems.
