Abstract:Abstract: A spin liquid is an insulating phase, in which no symmetry of the system is broken and no local order parameter is present, even at zero temperature. Quantum spin liquids exhibit many unusual properties, such as excitations with fractional quantum numbers and emergent gauge fields. There are many promising experimental candidates for spin liquid states, although a definitive verification has yet to be established. Here, we study a spin system with a two-fold orbital degeneracy, SU(4) symmetric (Kugel-Khomskii), and examine the possibility that the model is a three-dimensional spin-orbital liquid.
