The theory and history of the r-process and why we still can NOT calculate properly

I start with a description of  the unique history of the theory from its creation in the early thirties and how leading physicists 

objected to it and fought against it. Physics may operate against “common sense”.

I describe its greatest successes and explain why we cannot calculate the yield of the theory in a convincing way. 

Finally I discuss the future: The renaissance in low energy nuclear physics and what it may bring.
