Abstract: | I will demonstrate the strong relation between response of the amorphous phase of a metal to its response to external load with and without irradiation. This will be shown to have a determinatal role in a variety of scenarios; from spall due to external shock [1], to crystallization velocities in deeply undercooled metals [2], to creep (both with and without irradiation) [3,4,5].
The focus of the presentation would be a description of a new creep mechanism controlled by response of amorphous like grain boundaries[3]. I will then try and indicate how this new understanding can lead to develocpment of improved radiation resistant materials and alternatively, how it can facilitate understanding of currently proposed nano-structured materials such as oxide dispersion strengthened steels
