Abstract: | Galaxies turn their gas and dust content into stars. The gas content of galaxies is a key parameter in understanding star formation in the context of galaxy evolution. However, direct gas mass measurements via CO emission lines are both difficult and controversial, in particular at z>1. Researchers often resort to indirect methods of deriving gas content and star formation efficiencies and find very gas reach galaxies at z>1, that are inefficient at producing stars. I will discuss the current "common knowledge" regarding the gas content of galaxies and the star formation efficiencies, how these evolve with cosmological time, and some of the controversy. |
